Star Wars is the phenomonal science fiction saga created by George Lucas. Star Wars uses themes from science fiction, political drama, classic mythology, and comedy to create an epic story of good vs evil. To date, there are six Star Wars movies in two sets of trilogies. The original triliogy consists of "Star Wars A New Hope" (1977), "The Empire Strikes Back" (1980), and "Return of the Jedi" (1983). The main hero, farmboy Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) along with Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), a rebel leder, and the charming smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford), fight in a galactic war against the tyrannical Empire. As Luke develops into a powerful Jedi, he is confronted by his newly discovered father, the sinister Darth Vader (David Prowse/voiced by James Earl Jones), who does the bidding of his evil master, the all-powerful Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid).
The much-later second trilogy consists of "Star Wars Episode I, The Phantom Menace" (1999), "Star Wars Episode II, Attack of the Clones" (2002), and "Star Wars Episode III, Revenge of the Sith" (2005). These prequel films focus on Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) -- Luke's father and later Darth Vader -- from his childhood as a slave strong with the Force, to his growth from a Jedi padawan into a powerful Jedi knight, to his tragic marriage to Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman), and finally his seduction by Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) to the dark side of the Force and final confrontation with his former master and friend, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor).
The Star Wars movies have been spun-off into video games, toys, tv shows, and countless parodies and copycat films. Star Wars is clearly one of the top franchises ever.
